In this short video, we explore Mati Diop’s 2019 film, where the Atlantic Ocean looms as both a promise and a peril. Through striking visuals and sound, the ocean becomes a symbol of migration, memory, and loss. The film echoes the tragic legacy of the Middle Passage and the modern-day journey from Dakar to Europe. As young men vanish into the waves, those left behind grapple with their absence—and the ocean’s unrelenting presence.
