UNIT 2. Migration in the Mediterranean. Media coverage of Aylan (Alan) Kurdi in Turkiye and Greece
This video explores how the media in Turkiye and Greece covered the tragic death of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned in the Aegean Sea in 2015 during his family's journey from Syria to Greece while seeking asylum in Europe. The video provides background on Aylan's story and then focuses on the photographs that captured his lifeless body on the Turkish coast. It discusses the impact of these photographs and the media coverage of Aylan's tragedy on public discourse about refugees. In addition, the video presents artworks in both countries inspired by Aylan and prompts reflection on the power and ethics of photographic images.
