UNIT 1. Border politics. Border Crossing in the Media and the Arts

This class examines how acts of border crossing are portrayed in mass media, film, and other artistic interventions. While news and television often document the suffering and hardship of migration experiences, they frequently frame migrants’ crossings as a threat. Artistic works, by contrast, interrogate the forms and politics of representing these journeys. The session will focus in particular on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s mixed-reality installation Carne y Arena (2017).
