UNIT 5. Reflecting on Migration in Media. Who Speaks, who narrates? Reflecting Positionalities in Migration Documentaries

This MOOC uses two documentary films on the southern borders of Europe to reflect upon the limits and possibilities of screening migrations and migrants. David Fedele’s The Land Between (2014) and Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea (2016) both actively engage with their filmmaker’s positionality as white, global northern filmmakers and the problems of an exoticising gaze on migrants from a wide range of African countries. As this MOOC shows, such strategies themselves can both succeed but can also be highly problematic and alienating, despite the filmmaker’s best intentions.
