6.3b.- The Coronation Mantel of Roger II

This video will focus on one example: the coronation mantle of Roger II. This mantle was made around 1134 in Palermo, using iconographic motives, techniques and epigraphy from the Islamic tradition. This video will show what are the debates around the creation and use of this mantle by the Norman Christian kings, and how its history was forgotten and rewritten when later on was incorporated to the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire.

II. Esta capa se realizó hacia 1134 en Palermo, usando motivos iconográficos, técnicas y epigrafía de la tradición islámica. Este video mostrará cuáles son los debates alrededor de la creación y uso de esta capa por parte de los reyes normandos cristianos de Sicilia y cómo su historia fue olvidada y re-escrita cuando se incorporó más adelante a la regalia imperial del Sacro Imperio Romano.
