Sesión Inaugural: Discovery Informatics II

Yolanda Gil oversees the Knowledge Technologies group within ISI’s Intelligent Systems division. The group investigates requirements for collection, use, and dissemination of knowledge in distributed, shared computing environments. Her research focus is on human-computer collaboration, particularly how people can be assisted with complex, knowledge-rich tasks that cannot be fully delegated and automated. She have become very active in a new area: the use of AI techniques to support scientific analysis. Current interests include assisting scientists with complex data analysis through computational workflows, acquiring procedural knowledge from end users through tutorial instruction, and web-based assistance and collaboration in social networking sites.
Gil was recently elected Chair of the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group in Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGART), and leads the W3C Provenance Group. She has served on the Advisory Committee of the Computer Science and Engineering Directorate of the NSF and on the Council of AAAI. She isalso Research Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Southern California (USC) where she advises students, teaches courses on occasion, and oversees PhD student recruiting and funding for the department. She also serves in the Advisory Committee on National and International GraduateFellowships at USC. Gil received her Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University, and joined ISI in 1992.
